The platform is basically the underbody and suspension.
Think VW bringing back the Bug a few yrs ago... all they did was take the VW Golf underbody and slap the curvy Bug "look" and interior on top. That is relatively easy to do. It allows the company to develop more models and share the expense of the platform to a greater number of vehicles.
Amazing - there is a Wikipedia entry for everything, see link below.
I don't have a minute to search but if you look for some articles about the cost structure of the auto industry, platform development is a biggie, a couple billion per.
