MB's have been real problem children for the last decade or so. I don't know if they're getting any better but I'd sure take a look at what Consumer Reports says about them. Saabs on the other have actually been recomended off and on by CR in recent years--the only European car to have that honor. But if a Saab isn't going to work I'd take a look at a new Acura (which you could get for the same price as the used MB). The Japanese have really ramped it up in the last 4 or 5 years in terms of fit/finish/materials. My son has a new Acura MDX that looks, feels and drives more like what one expects from an Audi than a new Audi actually does. I'm driving a Subaru Outback with the 3.0 six the feels for all the world like an A6 (which used I to sell). I sure wouldn't have said that about a Subaru as little as four or five years ago (it even has good seats!). All of the Europeans have been cost cutting while the Japanese are going in the other direction. And they've learned a thing or two about giving a car some personality. If anything they may be on the verge of a roll reversal. I'm still a Saab guy but if I were buying new I'd sure take a close look at some of the Japanese alternatives.
