I own a '02 9-5 with 160K mi, serviced faithfully through the Swedish Garage, an indy in Charlotte, NC. Also have had 2 VW Passats ('00 & '04); the '04 currently at 120K mi, that get serviced at the local dealer. All cars are V6 w/ timing belts. We run premium (93 octane) as recommended for both the Saab and the VW.
Our experience is that costs per occurrence are about the same. That means, I've stopped flinching at the quotes for major repairs to either of them. Both require timing belt service at every 60K (Saab) to 75K (VW). The Saab has experienced the predictable DI cassette failure, the VW had front CV boots replaced. Nothing else outside of wear parts and scheduled maintenance for both cars.
My car repair history is on TrueDelta.com, look up '02 9-5 V-6 for the record. More things start to go at 120K+ miles, but the car runs fine, looks great, and is still much less expensive to fix than replace.
One other thing - I notice that the more recent Saabs ('06 and newer, maybe?) run on regular fuel, and the newer VWs (even non-turbos) still require premium. I've no idea how the performance of the Saab 2.3 liter varies due to lower octane other than to compare the published performance claims (250-260 HP!)
