9-5s are probably cheaper

I'm currently on my second 9-5 (an '08) and second VW (an '06 TDI). I've also owned three Audis - two were '80s versions. Interestingly, my older Audis required frequent maintenance, but nothing like having to remove the entire front end to access something as described below. And I put 200,000 miles on the '86 5000 Turbo.
I've driven 185,000 9-5 miles, and the maintenance is rather simple in most cases. The TDI has the DSG transmission, and when the tranny is serviced in another 10,000 miles, it will cost $350.00. When the timing belt gets changed, that will be another big item. So it looks like the VW is going to be more expensive, but as also has been mentioned below, the VW displays it's engineering with a very tight feel and superb handling.
I think VW is getting the message here, to an extent. The updayed TSI 2.0 turbo used a timing chain, and for '09 all maintenance is included for the first 35,000 miles or so (yeah, I know Saab has been there for a long time).
One off hand conclusion I might come to is that even though VWs might be a little more expensive, they also hold their value better at resale time. So, if you don't keep a car until it's been run into the ground, that's a consideration.
