It might be best to check a VW forum (VW Vortex maybe) for more on this. The DSG requires a service every 40,000 miles. Many people pay over $400 for the service, and since I'm at only 30,000 miles I haven't done it yet. I do know the DSG fluid is very expensive, and the process is very time consuming, even requiring that the car sit for a long time until the fluid is at the optimum temperature to be changed. I like the DSG enough that I'm not too annoyed at the future cost, provided the tranny holds up as long as I own it.

This does beg the question, though, as to the true cost savings of running a VW TDI. We live in hilly country and rarely get much more than 40 MPG on a tank. As an aside, my 9-5 was hit in a parking lot recently and is currently in the body shop. I was given an Enterprise Ford Focus to drive, and on my long commute I'll be darned if that thing isn't getting 40 MPG! So, one has to appreciate VW engineering and be willing to pay for it (I am), otherwise I guess we could all go out and get a Focus....
