You've gotten into oversteer or understeer "on the track at speed". I bet you didn't have bald tires on the back, & snow on the track. The amount & nature of the feedback is very different, and that feedback makes all the difference in anyone's ability to deal with it.
And I bet the loss of traction wasn't as sudden or as complete as you can find with poor tires on the back in snow. I'm not talking about moderate differences in tread depth. I'm a little bit nervous that someone will use these discussions as a justification to leave nearly bald tires on the back "because the rear tires don't do anything". Just because they do less than 50% of the braking, and none of the acceleration, that doesn't mean they don't contribute to vehicle stability.
There's a lot of points in this discussion that make all kinds of sense, on BOTH SIDES.
