I think the advice on putting new tyres on the rear is probably right for most drivers but that's because most drivers run their tyres down to the minimum, so they put the bald ones on the back and the almost bald ones on the front. Whereas the typical Saabnet driver will have more sense, and will replace the things before they are minimal.
Living as I do in south-west England I seldom see snow these days - very different from 30 years ago, when I kept a set of chains in the trunk - but when I do I leave the 9000 in the drive, because it's wearing F1 GS-D3s which are fabulous in everything except for snow. Plenty of tread all round, but the wrong compound and tread design.
