Love pickin' this one with you, too, Mike.
I guess all the people I've seen in winter who plow straight ahead into fixed objects or off the road must be making the front tires work too hard. (Or maybe the tire shop made them put the worn tires on the front!)
OTOH, you can spin (oversteer) and actually stop without hitting anything--not uncommon in winter on snowy roads. Makes me wonder why so many think understeer is so "safe." To most folks who drive in snowy climates a little rear wheel skid is no biggie.
Stability happens at both ends of the car. Skidding straight into what you're gonna hit also means the car's a bit unstable.
A bigger issue is that most people don't really know how to deal with EITHER understeer or oversteer. It's sure not taught in most normal driver's ed courses and anyway, those classes were a long time ago for most drivers.
Over to you, big guy.
