I searched, but didn't find an answer on this ---

I have four snow tires on winter rims for my '99 9-5. They're 205 16 Nordic Tracs. Problem is this: Two of the snows have served their time and have to be replaced. Two others have more seasons left in them, but are different iterations of the Nordic Trac tread.

On another thread, I read that General Altimax Arctic is very similar to a Nordic Trac. My size is available at several nearby locations, so I'm wondering if there's any (non-marketing) reason that I should not buy two new Altimaxes and mix them with the old ones.

I'd be inclined to put the new ones on the front, but I've heard arguments that your best tires should go on the rear, even for FWD. (Makes no sense to me.)

The car gets very light use in the winter, since it's garage mate is a Honda SUV with AWD. It's mostly used for local, non-commuting pleasure driving and no hoonerish antics. If the weather is treacherous, I either: a) stay home, or b) take the AWD. But I like to have my Saab available when the mood strikes. Since I live at the top of a long hill, and climbing it when the weather is greasy without proper shoes can be an adventure I feel I need to take care of the snow tire situation.

So do you think I can mix the new and old tires?
