I was driving down a highway one winter night in a FWD car. Road appeared to be slush but there was ice under it. The rear broke loose and started to come around. The front held itself down. It was at about 90 degress when I got it to swing back, but Newton came into play and after coming straight, the rear continued past straight into almost 90 degrees the other way. Correct it again, same thing in the other direction. Fortunatly, the front stayed planted and controllable, and I was able to correct again. After 2 cycles in each direction, I found myself under a bridge where there was no ice and with the rear in motion to swing again, it grabbed, and I was able to straighten it out.
If the front had been coming loose instead of the rear, I would have hit a guardrail for sure and been seriously injured. You'd have to be nuts to want the best Winter tires on the rear.
