Knew I'd get flammed but it's still my personal preference. Just saying that when I DRIVE RESPONSIBLY in the snow I've had many more occasions to get stuck going up a steep hill or getting out of a plowed in parking spot than instances where the rear end breaks loose so I'm more inclined to look for forward traction. In a FWD car that means the front. If per chance the rear end break loose I'd like some steering traction to turn into the skid. I'd also conjecture that additional tread on the fronts will minimize straight line hydorplaning to some extent.
I'm not talking about trying to get the last 2,000 miles out of a set of failing tires. In this case there was a very marginal difference.
But the key is not to drive like a fool to begin with. I'm not looking for drive traction so I can blast down the interste at 50 MPH in a blizzard or torential downpour. I just want to get up the hill at the end of my dirt road and not walk the 1/2 mile home. But it's a moot point as I've got full sets of new mounted snows sitting in my garage ready to put on both my Saab and AWD Volvo in the next few weekend.
