Many audiophiles don't think CDs at considerably higher bitrates than MP3s are high quality, so why would I even think they'd look at an MP3 player at all?
Apple, Microsoft, SanDisk, any of them don't hold a candle to high-end audio equipment, and the people who buy them know it. I didn't buy an iPod because I thought it would replace a multi-thousand dollar home audio system, I bought it because I could carry most, if not all of my music with me, and play it back with reasonable enough quality so that I could enjoy the music.
As for iTunes, well, if you like fiddling with stuff and manually copying things, that's fine, but many of us enjoy the plug-and-play ease of use of ripping a CD into iTunes, then instantly syncing it to the ipod pr iPhone. That some of what I bought in the past through the iTunes store had copy protections on it really isn't an issue for me, as I don't copy amongst many computers.
The quality of the build of the equipment (which is what the original discussion was about), at any rate, has hardly anything to what one does with it. If one wants to record MP3s at 96 kbps, you can, but it won't sound as good as if you did it at 256 kbps, which won't sound as good as a CD at about 1.4 Mbps. Just like you can listen to AM radio on a $5,000 Nakamichi sound system, or FM radio, or...
