Linn + Naim would be extreme examples. The build quality is fantastic. The product is fantastic in every respect, and demonstrably better than anything from China. That said, even the entry models are stratospherically priced for most people. But my point is, it is built to last for decades, + serviceable + upgradeable for years to come. That is a core philosophy of both companies.
In many ways, Saab imho has a lot in common with Naim. Saab build quality is not as extreme, but those several decade old classic 900s are solidly built, repairable, and worth fixing... also like Naim products, they are uncommon and have unique but sensible features ("quirky" to some). Both have a devoted following that "get" the finer aspects of the product. As a famous beer maker said "those who like it, like it a lot".
All that said, Miele is perhaps a better example for Saab to look to as a case study. Our dishwasher is well built, but not over built. I'd rather own a German built Miele than a Chinese one, but I suspect they have figured out how to get Chinese manufacturing right.
It takes a company with a very good understanding of how to make a quality product to get it right in China. Very few can do it. The potential for chaos there is unbelievable! In my observation, substantial problems can exist on the line, though the supply chain can also risky (eg knockoff leakage). This may improve over time as industry there matures, but there is risk in building a car there today, imho... laptops, ipods, and other cheap disposable consumer items are not a fair comparison... who ever heard of a fatal ipod accident?
Imho, I'd love Saab to go more the direction of Porsche (but with Swedish rather than German values)... but I know that is not for everyone...
James...
