... though I think Saab involvement has weakened. This is what spawned the Volvo Recharge, and unlike the Volt, this is really disruptive technology. The PML pancake motors solve a whole whack of EV problems... not a panacea, but very big step!
I agree with coggs - battery technology/cost is a big issue, particularly for pure EV. Also, afaik, the PML motors also are not yet in adequate volume production to make them cost effective... but get them there + it will be a big seller! (sounds like business/production ramp up limitations wrt PML cost, not technical, so easier to solve)
The nice thing about the PML motors is they remove a big chunk of weight out of the middle of the car. If the cost comes down on them, the demands on battery weight/power ratio are reduced, so cheaper, lower tech battery options could be considered (at least in the short term)...
does anybody know if the Prius is a money maker or money loser? we must be reaching a point where some of the hybrids are actually past breaking even? no?
