You will need to look carefully at the specifications of the compressor to make sure the startup current doesn't exceed the breaker rating. Most motor driven devices will have a startup draw significantly higher than the steady state current draw. The other important point is to find out how many other devices are on the circuit that the outlet is on. If the garage is in a home, the outlet in the garage is quite often on the same circuit as the wall outlets in the adjacent room. If the garage is free standing, it could be that all the lighting and outlets in the garage on on the same 15-amp circuit.
