Kind of a sweeping generalization. Don't know which older models you mean. All of them? Saab design has been an interesting thing. I was not at all fond of the C900 4-door, but I loved the C900 3 door and owned one for about ten years. The two designs only differed back of the B pillar, but somehow the whole 4-door looked bad to me. Not all agree - some love them. Pre-'87 900's had an ungainly looking bumper, which was similar to what Mercedes did with its 450 SL after new bumper regulations came out. But the '87 re-design fixed all that. The best C900 was the '91 SPG. Saab had a photo of one in Talladega Red in a sales brochure that was awe inspiring. I kept a copy of that.
My '91 9kt idles pretty well, and all my fillings are still in place...although I did have to have one replaced recently... hmmm...
My wife has an '01 9-5 wagon, and although it seems a more refined car in some ways, and we prefer it on long trips. When I'm by myself, I prefer my '91 9kt. It's more of a driver's car, very fun to drive. Interestingly, I thought the 9000 was more refined than the C900, and the C900 a big step up from our VW Rabbit. Maybe it's just that one ends up thinking the latest car they get is a step up. I dunno.
