We bought our first Saab in 1984 from Gauthier Motors in Salem, MA that also sold Mercedes and Subarus. I found the service manager and the advisors were more than a little condescending to Saab owners and can only imagine how they treated Suby owners. I didn't feel the need to be treated with contempt by someone I was paying to work on the car. The next closest dealer proved himself to be very sketchy, so I avoided him, too.
The car needed almost nothing under warranty so when it was over I bought a manual, added to the tool collection and never looked back. I did everything else on my own or at a pricey indy in Marblehead, who was less than honest but did good work. A local parts store could get me all I needed for parts so all was well.
We kept that C900 for 20 years, but all work was done my me or an indy. And we've bought more Saabs because we like the cars, not because of wonderful dealer experiences. We had the same kind of experiences with an "award-winning" Volvo store where our CPO purchase deemed us unworthy of receiving good service.
What is so hard about being fair, honest and treating customers with respect? Why don't dealers get this? Back when I worked for VW a district sales manager explained much of it in one sentence: "The only thing that exceeds a dealer's ego is his greed."
