Having worked at a Lamborghini dealership several years ago, I can confidently say the best butt-in-seat experience I ever had was a 1998(?) 911 Turbo. I'm not a huge Porsche fan but I was blown away by this car. It's as easy to drive as a Camry if you kept it under 3k RPMs but once the turbos kicked it, it was an entirely different beast. Seats four (sort of) and visibility is outstanding. Great build quality and I'm sure even your wife would enjoy driving and riding in it. I honestly can't say enough good things about the car.
Italian cars like the Diablo, Murcielago, Testarossa, etc will give you an entirely different experience. It's very exciting but you tend to have to work harder; the cars are large and visibility is almost non existent. However, there is nothing quite like the sound of 12 cylinders screaming right behind your ears. It's very addictive. Most Italian stuff (yes, even the new stuff) is difficult and expensive to live with but a lot of the German stuff just doesn't compare when it comes to driving excitement.
Another car I really enjoyed driving was the Panoz AIV Roadster. It's just a very fun little roadster (along the lines of the Plymoth Prowler if your in to that kind of thing). It had a Ford Cobra powertrain so it's very reliable and easy to service and operate. It's a tiny tight little car mainly for fair weather only though. A decent example should run around $35-45k.
