saddle (that small black hockey puck sized thing) is far too small. on my floor jack, it's about 5-6" in diameter, and much shallower as well. it still has the 4 bumps around the outside edges as well.
i can understand why you were wanting to put a piece of wood on top to give you a little more support i'm guessing?
if you are going to replace your jack, the saddle would be something to keep in mind. if you are basically happy with your jack, you might see if you can find a replacement saddle off another jack and attach that to your jack in place of your little saddle.
all floor jacks move a little bit as the weight is pushing down on one side of the arm, and that causes the jack to move in the opposite direction. one thing you could do is to move the turning wheels at a 90 degree angle to your jacking direction (like the picture shows). that way, the jack will not be so inclined to "walk" as you're lowering it.
luckily you said the tank has a dent and not a hole or gash, so now your car has a hidden character mark. we have all done things at one point or another on our cars we regret, so don't beat yourself up too badly about it. ask me why i don't throw triumph alternators around in frustration anymore, i learned too lol.
you are ok, that is the main thing. i would recommend putting chocks under the wheels not jacked to prevent the car moving as well. 2x4's work if you don't have actual chocks.
mark :-)
