I've stopped using jack stands and use a method similar to the Sears Lift'N'Secure, but simpler. I use 2, 3 ton jacks with the 5" diameter lifting pads and short pieces of 2x4 that fit into the lifting pad recess. With one jack on each side of the car, at the front emergency jack lift points, the front of the car can be raised quite high. Along with the jacks, I use a 10" length of 4x4 that can be used 2 ways. One is placed behind the wheels and across the side rails of the jack. This prevents the jack from dropping down to less than about a foot from the ground, and traps the 4x4 between the wheels, lifting arms, and side rails of the jack. For more clearance, the 4x4 can be stood on end behind the wheel axle and between the jack frame rails. This places the top of the 4x4 under the lifting pad pivot pin and more or less trapped in place when the jack is lightly resting on the 4x4. The standing 4x4 should not be used on anything other than a level concrete surface.
