I don't have some of the angst other Saabers have for BMW, although I think they're vastly over-rated and overpriced.
BMW makes some fine cars, and while the MINI hasn't exactly been a paragon of reliability, they really aren't bad cars and have a substantial cult following. A good friend has one and it has about 130K on it with not a lot of issues and he's done several track days a year with it as well as normal driving.
With that platform and some Saab-like tweaks, this could be a pretty nice car. And Saab could really use an entry level car.
As a small company trying to rebuild and reinvent itself, Saab really has to look to other firms for costly things like platforms. Many manufacturers share platforms (including all current Saabs), so this in NOT a big deal.
