The original MINI in its day was far from a mass market car in the US. That was VW Beetle territory in the '60s for small imported cars.
Fast forward to the new MINI. The branding for the new model was superb and it built a lot of excitement for the brand and it has become quite successful.
I'm guessing that a lot more people remember the early Saabs than do the early MINIs and with some really smart, classy marketing (like the new MINI) it could be pretty successful. Lots of people like (and will buy) a small affordable car that *doesn't* look like everything else.
I hope it happens.
