While Saab did end up engineering the best versions of the Impreza & Trailblazer, they were easily identified as badge-engineered cars. I guess GM didn't figure that people buying in those markets could tell the difference. It worked for decades with ChevroPontiOldsmoBuick & Caddy...
I would think that a retro Saab has to look very different from a MINI for it to sell at all. If it doesn't look like a Saab of some sort, it's dead before it leaves the factory (would this mean on Euro delivery you picked up your 2014 92 in Oxforshire?).
But, the MINI platform would probably lend itself well to a modern interpretation of the 92 or 93. Stretch the wheelbase a tad & extend the overhangs a little, round it off ala Sixten Sason, and I can start to see it. Compare the dimensions, and other than the MINI being a bit wider, a 92/93 on that platform would be very, VERY possible.
Mind you, I'm still skeptical of every one of these "Saab is in talks with..." so-called "News" bites (they'd call them rumors everywhere else...). I think many folk are grasping at straws. Saab has to get people to buy the bread-and-butter lines of the 9-3, 9-4 & 9-5 for the next few years, or there won't be a 9-2 (or 92, or...).
