What are you expecting the new 9-5 to be? Just because it targets the A6, 5-series and the like, doesn't mean it's going to be better than those cars on any given point of design, size, performance, etc. Those cars each have their pluses and minuses, too.
It's easy to say what you *want* the car to be like, but, as Mick Jagger said, "you can't always get what you want." For some buyers, the new 9-5 will be the perfect car. For most buyers it will be, like any car, the best mix of compromises, the one that feels best to them, or maybe that says they aren't just following the Audi/Bimmer crowd.
As for what automotive journalists think, who cares? Their opinions are interesting but not as important as what I think. I'm sure the new 9-5 is very nice, and I'd consider one if I needed that size car--despite the glaring absence of a hatch-- which might just about make it perfect.
