Flagship 9-5

I have long awaited the new 9-5, and vowed it to be my next car. That buying decision has now been clouded by two things. The first, Saab's long-term viability under Spyker, I have commented on earlier. The second, I am sorry to report, is the 9-5's reception in the automotive press. It has now been damned by faint praise in three sources: by an automotive journalist in the British press, by Road & Track, and by Car & Driver. All three reports credited Saab with significant steps, but all noted lack of competitive interiors, suspension system and adaptive controls, and other features.
The four cyl version got slightly higher marks, but it is not as quick as I'd like.
I realize this is a compromise product based on the Opel chassis, and essentially the GM-based product. The new Buick Regal is its alter ego, and it will be interesting to see how the sport version compares. As I noted in an earlier post, I drove the standard version and it was no match for my 9-3 Aero.
I will make up my own mind, but suspect the 9-5 will need another iteration before becoming the car I envisioned -- and I sure hope sales demand for Saabs take us to that point rapidly.
The upcoming 9-3 re-design may be the next best step.
