Hmmm! Assuming GM has completed its strategic review and made a decision, I suppose a 3-month deadline is possible. In my corporate experience, that suggests much faster analysis and decision-making than we typically see. GM continues to advertise Saab, which I take to be a marginally sign.

BMW would likely be a welcome buyer, but BMW's had its own problems, and is working on cost reduction. Opel is GM in Europe, so that's out. Fiat, which has been plagued by all kinds of corporate problems over the years seems a stretch, both financially and in terms of corporate culture. Daimler-Benz strikes me as a long-shot possibility. Tata seems questionable. Ratan Tata has been extremely successful in building a global conglomerate -- everything from autos to cosmetics to construction equipment. Taking on a low-sales volume line of cars in addition to Jaguar and development of the Nano in India would add another risky enterprise.

Cap these issues off with the uncorroborated reports of Saab / GM spokesmanship in obscure positions, and I am inclined to think that this chapter of the book is not yet closed.

Saab seems too good a car to lose, and offers considerable future potential, in my view, but where we go from here needs to be a cold-eyed business decision. Let's hope we get an outcome we like, if no other reason than for re-sale value. Keep your eyes on the trade publications and the Wall St. Journal.
