I didn't realize Porsche had such a large stake in VW/Audi (although I was aware of the shared suv platform). I really like how Porsche has been able to maintain an iconic design (the 911) over many decades - something Saab has lost largely with GM... I agree though, Saab's most similar competition is Volvo and Audi, so what you say makes complete sense.

To a large extent, whether it's Porsche or BMW, the Germans have a different mindset than the Swedish companies, yet there is a good deal of product overlap. So although either would likely enable better products than GM, in bad times, I don't see it happening... maybe at a fire sale price (which it could easily come down to)... One note of optimism for me is the cooperative product development between Saab and Volvo on the Recharge. I think at the right price, there is enough value in Saab in Sweden (R+D, test facilities, etc) that somebody will grab it up rather than let it fail. Even if it means we get more Saab-like Volvos, that's better for me than Chinese cars with Saab badges on them... but GM's just looking for the highest bidder, so we'll see...

Another interesting possibility with many common values could be Subaru (rally, well built, practical, fun, turbos, hatches). They have been killing Saab, Volvo, and Audi combined in the market here, and the Outbacks are priced about the same... but again, more overlap is not what any company needs these days...
