I used to be a VW guy, even spent a number of years selling them. Like a lot of companies they periodically get these nutty notions. Like in the late 80's early 90's they got it in their heads to cut corners on things like hub caps which make a huge difference in how a car looks. So almost all VW's of that era had these godawful looking pie plate hub caps and naturally didn't sell well. Then they came back for a while in the early 2000s with the Jetta and New Beetles which were big hits. Then they decided to move up market and compete with Audi, which they happen to own. Now they're cutting corners and rebadging Dodge Caravans as VW's. I guess it's some sort of "emperors new clothes" deal--some big wig has a brain fart and then badgers underlings into telling him or her what a great idea it is. It's actually kind of amusing to watch if you don't have a stake in it.
