My job was figuring out where to locate dealers and how many cars to allocate to each dealer. It was a fun gig and I had a good motor pool to pull cars (any VW or Audi) from for weekend and vacation junkets.
VW has long had this attitude that "German engineering" was their unique selling proposition and that it was what discerning buyer wanted. Except for the minor point that the cars had waaay too many issues and that VW had a tendency to treat customers, shall we say.... poorly. It was common or them to blame customers for the car not working correctly.
Anyway...
this kind of cost cutting is no surprise to me. I've owned a bunch of VWs,got all my walking around money at college fixing them, worked for the company and in my experience VW/Audi has a history of muddled thinking mixed with total arrogance.
Several of the Americans I worked with called it "The Masters of the World Syndrome." As in... "Ve are ze masters of ze vorld. Zis time ve vill not be shtopped."
Some things just don't change. In this case they continue failing to understand what customers value.
