The size bit is ego, but if VW is #2 or #3 it's really not an issue. They may well get there. Aim high, I always say.
The rear brake thing, while seeming goofy, it more an availability issue than a practical matter. While totally in synch with the inside why the company thinks, it's BS. It will be available on a base model. They will make or import a few cars with drums in back. Then the dealers (who are much smarter than the manufacturer on this stuff) will order cars with 4 discs. VW will force a few drum brake cars on each dealer. I saw this done many times when I worked for VW.
But at the end of day, VW can claim an attractive price point for a stripped model. Which some people will actually buy.
But one has to wonder.... what's the real delta in cost to VW between rear drums and discs? $50? $100? $150? If they can say they can deliver a Jetta to a customer that gives them the kind of "bragging rights" that warms VW's Teutonic heart.
