I dont know many mechanics/body shops that are going to go on a treasure hunt to find a bunch of matching used parts for an insurance claim. In my experience they simply give an estimate to repair. Sadly, for older cars with serious damage the estimate to repair often exceeds the book value of the car and the insurance company simply treats the car as totalled and writes a check......that is in effect putting you back in the position you were in prior to the accident. Unfortunately , the check is typically less than the car is worth if it was well maintained.
For an insurance claim, ive never had any discussion regarding used parts. Ive used junkyard parts when ive had something fixed out of my pocket.
I had a seven year old Jeep Wrangler with front end damage. They repaired with new parts. The sticking point was if they used Genuine Chysler Parts or an aftermarket parts source, particularly for the body parts. In insisted that the dealer do the work. The insurance comp suggested their body shop who would have used secondary market body parts. It was fixed at the dealer....new parts.
