Pete -- take this to the experts at the John Bridge forums (google)
here's the info needed to figure this out
* whats the deflection # for the floor (you can find a link at the site above)
* what's the floor structure (length & type of joists, type of subfloor)
* what material are you planning on putting down (ceramic, porcelin, stone)
if you're doing stone, in addition to a strong sub structure, you'll need 2 layers of plywood.
you can't lay tile directly on top of plywood. On top of the plywood either CBU (cement board) or membrance (Ditra - much easier, but more expensive). then tile on top of that with thinset mortar.
depending on the materials you plan using - on John Bridge you'll get the correct info on whether to adjust the floor before you lay the subfloor or afterwards.
