Thanks for all the replies!
I plan to put down the 1/4" cement board on top of the 3/4" plywood, with Ditra on top, then tile. Yes, acrylic tub supported on 3 sides (instructions say to support the base with mortar).
I've already added additional support to the joists by adding blocking 2x12's between the joists at right angles. All screwed and glued; with joist hangers for good measure (it's a jetted soaker tub, so I wanted it to be solid).
Ripping 2x4s to bolster the joists sounds plausible. A lot extra work that I hadn't planned on... sigh.
I had 8 sheets of 3/4" and 1/2 plywood, as well as 6 sheets of durock on the second floor of the house near the bathroom. Can't help but wonder if the extra weight caused some structural leaning.....
