Are you sure you don't just wanna' join a sailing club for $200-400 entry and $30-50 a month? That's what I've been doing for 20 years, Harbor Island Yacht Club here in San Diego and Long Beach. Haven't sailed at all for about two years since the wife freaked in heavy weather so that's $864 in monthlies down the tube, a pittance compared to an unused boat. That's what happens, you get all jazzed up about it and then the boat sits when you move on to golf or better still motorcycle touring!
My instructor when I first joined pointed out he has a Catalina up in Oceanside. $200 a month in slip fees and another $100-200 a month in maintenance, almost $5,000 a year whether he uses is or not.
A Catalina 27 or 270 is the generic sailboat of all time and a popular club boat. Rents for about $175-200 a day. But sometimes there is just two of us so a Catalina 22 for $45, less the $36 monthly fee applied to any rental, means I go for an afternoon sale or race for $11. And sometimes I wanna' impress people and rent a Catalina 36 Mk II for about $400 for me and 10-12 friends.
Sailing clubs also have lotsa' events, weekday evening beer can races, weeknight racing series, flotillas to Catalina, races to the Coronado Islands, parties and many family events, kinda' like a country club.
But the important part is that doing nothing costs you only the monthly fee, instead of $400-500. You could rent a couple of weekends a month and still come out ahead and rent a boat somebody else fixes and maintains.
