There are (or at least used to be) two or three of these in Boston. Depending on the club, you had access to boats for casual day sailing and for cruising. You paid an annual fee based on what you wanted to do. Boats included Solings, J-24s, assorted Pearsons, Catalinas and several others. Worked great for me and many others, and certainly beat owning a boat as moorings in the Boston area are pretty pricey. You got most of the fun but none of the hassles of owning a boat. There were limitations but was easy to live with.
If I owned a boat again I'd probably get a small daysailer that could be trailered and then charter if I wanted a boat for vacations.
If you're a pretty hard core sailor and want to go all the time, it's easier to justify the cost of owning a boat. If you are more casual about it and the boat sits there a lot it's easy to start looking at what it costs compared to how much use you get out of it. Many of my contract charter clients had this issue, which is why they had me finding people to charter their boats.
The costs at JG's club look pretty reasonable. But costs on some popular lakes and especially on the ocean can get out of hand real fast if one's not careful.
