There may be two different things considered 'sailing clubs'. The traditional Yacht Club (which comes in both exclusive and more 'regular guy' versions) and what involves joining and having access to a fleet of boats. There's also joint ownership, maybe called "fractional" (not to be confused with a "fractional rig!") which I guess is kind of a time-share.
If you want to race or hang around with, learn from, sailors, a local "Yacht Club" is good. You may want to look for one of the more "regular guy" ones that are happy to have you, but don't have a staff (members volunteer) so price is low. Mine is reputedly the only one "in the black" on Lake Michigan in this economy, because our expenses are low. For a $5500 boat, finding a boat-share "club" might be OK but maybe not necessary. You'll have fewer choices and maybe, and maybe fewer weather options (bad weather you either go out or lose your spot?). I'd think that's best mainly if you (1) want to try different boats; (2) want to have access to a boat way out of your price range; (3) are just starting in your career and living on a shoestring. Since "Yacht" is considered by some to be a pretentious word (technically, it just means a pleasure boat) look for a "sailing club". Also, a lot may depend on your particular locale.
