Catalinas are like Chevys -- in a good way. Fairly economical, reliable, conservative designs. Lots of them around, available parts, a known quantity for service.
The 27 is a decent size with potential for different 'missions.' $5500 isn't bad, if the boat's in good shape. The survey will tell you that. I'd use the $5500 as a base and if there's any maintenance/restoration, negotiate a price reduction. But definitely get the survey. I've built boats and will still get a survey.
It's probably too big to trailer without a fairly serious rig.
Think about what you want to do, though. Can you sail? Do you have long family cruising in mind? Racing? Cruising a 27 probably a lot like camping. Racing in handicapped club fleets is do-able, but these days a 27 is about as small as most offshore fleets have.
Plan ahead on things like mooring. I've spent more on moorings by now than I've spent on sailboats. Where are you located? Temperate climates -- cold winters -- are good news bad news. You may need to get the boat hauled out, which gives you a chance to do work on the bottom, drop the mast and work on it, etc.
Things to look out for? Inspect the rig -- what's holding the mast up? Pay particular attention to the chainplates, a weakness in quite a number of older boats if not maintained, but not a major repair to get right. Check the deck for wet spots. That's a major headache to repair. The diesel's a diesel, but in a sailboat, often not used much. Fuel gets dirty and things grow in it if not used a lot. I think Catalinas have iron keels. Iron rusts. Check keel bolts and check for rust. Check the rudder for water intrusion in the 'glass. Probably a solid 'glass hull, which means no core to inspect. Read up on boats. It's a great hobby if you can approach it as a learning experience and have the facilities available.
