Without seeing the old PC, my guess is that it has a PATA (40-pin parallel) hard drive, and I'm 99% sure whichever new PC you buy, will have a SATA (serial) drive. Most PCs are built to support 2 hard drives with cabling and power connectors already present. All you normally need to do is remove the cover, set the old drive as a "Slave", boot the new PC and copy files from the old to the new drive. But with different technology drives, this is not easy.
Ifyou do have both serial and parallel drives, you might try this. I have some external USB hard drives, which all use PATA drives. If I need to copy from an older PATA drive, I just put the PATA drive to be copied in the USB drive, plug it in and copy it that way.
I have adapters to connect laptop drives to PATA disk cables. I don't know it they make PATA to SATA drive connectors, because this would be the easiest way to copy... Ron
