My suggestion was only so that you would have ready access to any and all files you needed to copy to the new machine. This will be a secondary drive, and not running anything. nothing in the operating system of your new system will be using anything on this old drive. In other words you wont have your gremlins to worry about. This is the simplest way to transfer the files from the old drive to the new one when your old system isn't stable. Your new system will not run from this (old) drive at all, the old drive is simply storage at this point.
However, If you know exactly what you want from your old system, and it will run enough to copy files, then just copy everything you need onto a mem stick, to move to the new system. You certainly could burn the files to a CD as well, which is what was done prior to the ready availability of flash drives.
With regard to e-mail settings...and or network connection settings, i.e. what type/provider is your ISP etc.
You should not need to get the settings from your old system, you should be able to find the settings on the web, online help. Email all you need is your POP3 and SMTP server IP's along with your username and password. Does the mail server require SSL connection, or connection on some non standard port. ALL of that information should be available on your ISP's help page.
