for Chicago, Toledo, and even Boston, though this year has been special for you. The single stages are lighter, smaller, clean all the way down to the pavement, and cost less. Some of them are downright lightweight, and can be hung on a hook in the garage. As mentioned below, my experience with Toro brand is easily 20+years, maybe even 40+. I used to think it was necessary to get a big 2 stage for the worst possible snow. 2 stage is good for northern Wisconson,mountains, and the like. What is nice in the above locations is to have a simple single stage which easily handles 90% of snowfalls, and will handle all snowfalls with some extra effort. Worst is wet snow, which 2 stage won't handle at all. Just my 2 cents...
