My parents owned a 1980 Chevy diesel (OEM conversion) Caprice Classic station wagon back in the day. It got great gas mileage, but was s-l-o-w and noisy. This was back in the day when diesel was cheaper at the pump than gas. When you factor in the increased MPG, it made great sense.
What keeps diesels from being bigger here (vs. Europe) is the fact that their refineries are set up to produce a higher proportion of each barrel of crude as diesel, vs. here, where nearly all diesel goes to the trucking and heavy equipment industry. Diesel at the pump is more expensive, and as a result, the math for buying one is not as compelling for consumers. On top of that, there are still restrictions from a particulate standpoint that keeps all but the very best engines out of the market - plus the European manufacturers are expecting diesels not to sell well here, so don't do the due diligence to register them here for sale.
