To be fair, I look at Saabs through the eyes of a c900 owner... I look at that as the icon, not the earlier cars (which were also iconic, but that is lost to most people today)... so the clamshell that I like, wasn't on earlier cars, including the ursaab. It is cool that Castriota has tried to pull commonalities + elements from all the cars going way back + to modernize them... that said, all those cars, for their commonalities, are quite different (eg the various sonnets)... makes the design too confusing... I think a simpler way forward might be to modernize the icon everyone associates with Saab, the 99/c900... I still get looks of amazement in our winter beater, and comments "oh you've got one of the beautiful shaped ones"... for it's time, it was a very futuristic + unusual looking car... the curves in the front (windshield, clam hood, etc) are great... the back end is a little square + awkward... for me taking that forward, one could modernize the whole package emphasizing the qualities of the front end + being more flexible at the back end... not so much retro as to regain the unique shape elements that were lost over time... but they don't pay me the big bucks! ;-)
Like Justin says, at least they are taking some risks. There is no reward without risk. Will be cool to see the actual 9-3. I hope I like it. I have no idea if I will or not from this concept! that's ok... keeps some suspense...
btw, I still don't see the Griffin... I guess I need to keep looking!
James...
