In the late 60's my dad and I took an annual fishing trip North of Sault St Marie, Canada. One year we spent an entire day rearranging 10mi of a logging road that was too rough for our Buick station wagon. When we got where we wanted to go, there was a VW Bus sitting there with those nice tall tires and rear engine that had no difficulity negotiating the road we spent hours smoothing out. The beaver dam we crossed is another story. I'd like to say that the lake we went to was worth the effort, it was not. The VW bus though made an impression.

The next year we owned a used VW camper. If Ralph Nader had spent any time with this vehicle, he would have been slamming it. The only thing between you and something you might hit was a thin layer of sheet metal. I could push it in by hand, and it was inches from my legs. We had the luxury of a spare tire mounted there, so maybe you would keep your legs with a 5mph impact.

With a canoe mounted on top, it was all you could do to hang on to the vehicle in a crosswind. Nevertheless, that VW saw a lot of Michigan, Canada, and the West.I think the hp was something like 70, though may have been 50. Uphills often dropped you to 2nd gear, and lines formed behind you. A used rebuilt engine cost $300. Installed. Great vehicle, but it was kind of good to see it go.

So it is a cult vehicle of it's time. The new cult vehicle is the Mercedes/Sprinter diesel turbo van in camper format. I hope VW can come up to those standards.
