Never had one, but had 3 air-cooled VWs Bugs and got all my walkin' around money in college fixing air-cooled V-dubs. My dad had the pick-up truck version of the bus, with tool boxes underneath the bed and fold-down sides and tailgate. Very useful vehicle despite the poor heat and lack of poke.
A year out of college I was working for VWoA. I was jazzed when the first Vanagons came out and often borrowed one on weekends for hiking, camping and skiing trips. My friends all loved it when I showed up in a Vanagon for a long weekend trip. Never needed one enough to buy one, but often wish I had. With a properly tweaked engine (bored, stroked, cam, dual carbs, exhaust) they'd make adequate power and could be counted on to get you down some really lousy roads with no issues. And the stock engine, if it died, was pretty cheap to R&R. And you could fix almost anything on the car with basic tools.
No one makes stuff like that any more. Too bad.
