I run mid-grade most of the time, but do use premium on trips, especially in summer when it's hotter and detonation would be more likely. However, I haven't found it to be cost-effective, at least in my '96 9000 5-speed which has an Aero ECU.

I've measured the fuel mileage on numerous 750-800 mile round trips from home in NH to Rochester, NY and on 480 mile round trips to NYC over 7 years in all weather. I've done this with a different flavor of gas in each direction. I find premium (Mobil 93 or Shell V-Power) invariably delivers 1 to 2 mpg LESS than mid-grade and about the same as regular. The *performance* difference is readily apparent between regular and premium, but less so between mid-grade and premium. Except for the added punch premium gives (boosting 20% into the red vs hitting the red with mid-grade), premium is not worth the extra money.

However, on a 2500 mile cross-country trip last summer with the car fully loaded, we averaged nearly 29 mpg which included full days running at 75-80 and long stretches (like most of Kansas) at 85-90. And that was all with premium.

Just my experience. YMMV
