Europe especially, are largely set up around public transport. My understanding of it is that a big chunk of the price of gas in Europe is tax that helps prop up the public transport. Lots of cars, but they seem to be used differently in my experience.
In the U.S. there is comparatively little public transport except in metro areas. So we drive. And now as gas prices go up we all wince, but some of the pain could have been avoided a long time ago with some planning and infrastructure investment, at least in many urban/suburban areas. All water under the bridge now.
Even so...
In FL people don't want a high speed rail between Orlando and Tampa ("gee you can drive it in an hour," they say). And here in NH our elected bozos continually try to block rail service from 3 NH cities to Boston, MA, a service that would make a lot of sense, especially as gas prices continue to rise.
