in the fifties. I recall it being about 5 blocks each way. My mom walked me the first few times and then I was on my own. I don't know that was life was so difference then. I can remember being chase by dogs and bullies. A guy tried to get me in his car once (I ran). People just worried a lot less. We didn't have all of the news yammering in our ear constantly. You didn't hear about every little detail of kidnappings and murders two thousand miles away. I had conscientious parents but my recollection as a child was of being a free-range chicken of sorts. I came and went pretty as I pleased (during daylight), roamed all over town at a young age and learned to take care of myself. I feel very sorry for modern children.
