Actually, the pension (without social security) is 60% of my gross benefits package, which includes what's paid for health insurance, etc. But I really don't know about state taxes. If I were 62, I would probably see an increase in pay from retiring, but I'm not there yet. And yeah, if I retire from the current job, my health insurance is covered until medicare kicks in, and then I can purchase through the employer a low-cost supplement. So if I could negotiate a bit more pay because of the health insurance and a short work week, the move makes even more financial sense. I would be moving from the state system to a private school.
Here's another factor. We live in a rural area, spending probably 3-4 nights a month in hotels in the city (after concerts, before early morning flights, etc.). The new job would be in the city, so the apartment I might get would be maybe 50% "free" since we would no longer be springing for hotel rooms on a regular basis.
