Oh, academics, that's different.... and I understand your question on the politics, and also may need to factor in the security of tenure. (while not an academic I have a few friends who are professors & I've got a couple of masters, so I've either seen or heard about the life, plus as an undergrad I took a class with David Hull on the "philosophy of science" that dealt a lot with the realities of research in academia & life as a phd student / research assistant... that class alone should scare off most well-adjusted people). So then you have to take into account the course load, how many days you have to be on campus on average a week, (classes, office hours, dept meetings), if you have to create a new course(s), etc. If you leave your current position & receiving a pension could you go back and teach the occasional course or a reduced course load, (after all its only a short walk)?
What's your area... you could always take the new job & use some of the extra money to travel (for "research" of course so you can write off the travel on your taxes... but check with your accountant first). That may be worth the hassle of a new position.
