Android GPS is amazing. I can speak right into my bluetooth - navigate to 1234 northeast none of your business avenue 99123 and 9/10 times it's spot on - that have dash mount things for like $20 for phones too. I spend most of my time driving long distances to places I haven't been before and I have routinely left my phone on the charger using GPS navigation on 6+ hour drives and the battery was still charged when I unplugged it. Also I have done 4+ hour drives and still had over 60% battery left when my cig lighter in the 900 broke - that's 4+ hours using navigation the entire time and using bluetooth answering calls for our business.
Anyways, I own a smartphone for many reasons, if $30 a month isn't out of your budget I'd say the best navigation really is a newer Droid. Google Maps hasn't EVER asked me to turn in the middle of an intersection, or lead me the wrong way, nor lost gps signal at the worst time, etc. Several GPS units I've had did have this happen. Some phones use not only GPS but they triangulate with cell towers or use wifi networks to get you the fastest initial lock time possible. To clarify - I've never waited longer than 5 seconds for a lock (with my Droid X) - I did have about 1/3 times on my original Droid take about 30 seconds for some unknown reasons but I have had ZERO issues with the Droid X.
One last thing though, if a smartphone isn't in your budget, one of the new Garmin Nuvi's would be my choice..
